Day 1

I started my own group so that Navi, Ryan and I could keep our pictures separate but still post them in the same place. Check out the group on Flickr: "Gamer Hall & Friend's DragonCon 2005 Adventures"

Today was lots of random fun, and far longer and more eventful than I expected. After meeting the Brothers Chaps this morning (see last entry), I was pretty sure my day couldn't get any better. I spent most of the afternoon wandering around the Con, or cooling off and hiding from the masses in Angus, Navi, and Ryan's room uploading and tagging pictures.

At 7pm, I managed to track down the presentation on Neal Gaiman and Dave McKean's movie Mirrormask, a live-action, classical animation, cgi, Henson-produced piece that I've been following for a while. Our presenter, the producer of the film Michael Polis, had managed to finally make it in 3 hours late after his airplane caught fire, and produced some amazing clipshots and a bunch of swag from his luggage (which he was rummaging through on stage, socks and all). He talked a lot about how the movie was in danger of never having a wide release, only opening in 15 theaters nationwide initially, and on the same day as Serenity. He urged us to get as many people out to see it as possible, to showcase the completely staggering accomplishment of about 12 people and a mere 4 million dollars.

We went to the Firefly party tonight, a big shindig attended by some of the cast, and it was pretty fun. I got to test out my costume for the Firefly LARP 11 of us are attending tomorrow night. On my way out I bumped into the Mirrormask guy again. A few beers and some sleep deprivation got him talking to me about how Sony was really doing the stupid Bottom Line thing and not releasing the film widely because the $4m initial investment was really a drop in the bucket compared to full distribution. He told me that, as with farscape, the fanbase would be the only thing to make it succeed. Oh, and he gave me the e-mail addresses of Sony's Domestic and International distribution managers. I smell a campaign arising.

Anyways, tomorrow's gonna be another huge day. It and Sunday are the big days, which frightens me considering how many fucking people are here. Apparent con-count this year is somewhere around 40,000 people in 3 giant hotel and convention centers.

Oooh ooh, I almost forgot: Parade in the morning!!

Night, love you all.
