The Solstice

A cliché.

Sometimes life isn't fair.

At this time of year, I rarely expect it to be. Look around: the consumer ritual reaches its apex on December 26th. People throw their money around whimsically, doing nothing but cementing a cycle of greed and materialism.

Fatalism, anyone?

I found out today that someone very important to me has a terminal illness. One of the strongest people I know, an ornery, opinionated, right-wing bastard, but someone who I could talk endlessly with about an endless number of things. A brilliant, genuine man. It's not as if he's already gone, or even as if he's going quickly, but... Sometimes life isn't fair. It's certainly not for him.
